Excerpt	The creation of the Romanian system of orders and medals was a long process due to the opposition of the Ottoman Empire. The article covers the first medal project from the reign of the Wallachian prince Barbu Dimitrie Ştirbei and the attempts of Alexandru Ioan Cuza to establish a national order and several medals. These projects form the core of the modern national awards system still in use today.
