Excerpt The following article is dedicated to a gold bracelet with precious stones, currently found in the collection of the National History Museum of Romania. It is set with twelve gems dating between 3rd century BC to 3rd century AD (nos. 1-4, 7, 8, 10, 12), as well as from 16th to the 18th centuries (nos. 5, 6, 9) and probably one from early medieval times (no. 11). The iconographic theme of intaglios largely reveals mythological scenes, symbols or heroes from Greek and Roman Antiquity (eg. the myth of Othryades, of Leda, the lyre or the aquila with wreath). The craftsman’s selection of stones did not adhere to a color or iconographic rule; moreover, their mounting reveals an adaptation to an existing material. An important detail that emerges from the design of this bracelet is that during the 19th century, the demand for engraved stones, especially for ancient ones, was particularly high. These were mainly used in the structure of neoclassical and archaeological style jewelry. Thus, without elaborate working details, the bracelet could be a product accessible to a wider category of population. Therefore, this type of jewelry complements a social and economic picture of the century in which access to precious objects surpasses that of great houses of jewelers and aristocratic families.
