The tokens that we present circulated inside the Pângăraţi prison in Neamţ County and were a kind of reward that prisoners with a regular behaviour received for their work in the prison workshops or for various paid private activities or works carried out outside the prison. The Pângăraţi Prison was founded in 1872, at the insistence of the Ministry of the Interior, in the buildings of the Pângăraţi Monastery. In 1873, the monastery's cellar, built by Abbot Varnava in 1850, was converted into a penitentiary for common law prisoners. In 1915 the prison was abolished. |
