This study examines the small-denomination coin assemblage from the Bulzeşti hoard, Dolj County, discovered in 2013. The assemblage comprises 1425 coins, the majority being Ottoman issues, with an unusual structure in terms of the proportion of coins attributed to each issuer, compared to contemporary hoards found in Wallachia and Moldavia. The research has identified a significant group of imitative coins, as well as a batch of Crimean Khanate issues, a singular presence in the known Wallachian hoards repertoire. Analysis of the hoard’s composition and the provenance of the small-denomination coins suggests connections with Asia Minor and the northern Pontic region, indicating that the hoard was not accumulated locally, but most likely reached Oltenia as a result of the military events at the beginning of the 17th century. Thus, the study provides new insights into coin circulation, the penetration of foreign issues, and the phenomenon of imitations in the extra-Carpathian region. |
