Excerpt | This year the National History Museum of Romania celebrates its 50th Anniversary and the current study is a tribute to half a century of cultural activity of the main history museum of Romania. The aim of this small article is to tell a part of the story of the Palace of the Post Office through the presentation of a few medals and plaquettes depicting the building, or better said its facade, found in the collection of the Coin Room of the National History Museum of Romania. Through the ten medals and plaquettes described in the article we take a journey in the 121 year history of an emblematic building of Bucharest, which was opened at the beginning of the 20th century, in 1901. The Palace of the Post Office was built between 1894 and 1899, in the Eclectic style, on the place of 17th century inn – the Constantin Vodă Inn, in the context of Bucharest’s development into a modern city. During its more than a century of existence the building, which is situated on one of the best known streets in the city – Calea Victoriei, had two functions: from its inauguration till 1972, the headquarters of the Post Office, and from then on the home of the National History Museum of Romania. Having past through two world wars and several earthquakes, which weakened and damaged it, this imposing public building is in dire need of restoration work so that other generations can admire and enjoy it in the future. |
