Abstract | This article presents the medal minted by Constantin Brâncoveanu, ruler in 1713, from a new perspective, thus complementing its descriptions made over the course of three centuries. The characteristics illustrated highlight not only the mark of modernity of the Brancovan stylistics, but its conjunction with the coherent language of the integral Brancovan art. Our research question is related to the comprehension of the assimilation process of the tulip flower by the Wallachian art of the 17th century. The tulip is a fascinating flower, recognized as inheriting the richest cultural, political, social, economical and religious baggage among all flowers, with a centuries-old history. In the European baroque art, the tulip occupies a central place and symbolizes effemerity. In the Brancovan art, the tulip carries not only an aestehtic function, but it joins also the traditional elements of ecclesial culture. The author points out parallels in the compositional artistic language and the unity of the Brancovan style through the perspective of this decorative motif usage. |
