| Excerpt | This paper describes and discusses nine posthumous staters of Lysimachus type struck at Byzantium, Histria (Istrus) and Callatis. Six of them - two of Byzantium (Nos 1.1-1.2) and four of Istrus (Nos 4.1-4.2 and 6-7) - are not previously known. The two staters of Byzantium share an obverse die with two known staters of Istrus (Nos 2-3). This is the first known example of die-sharing between the two cities and provides a clear illustration of activity of the 'Bosporus Workshop' in the Black Sea. The two staters of Istrus (Nos 2 and 3) were in turn struck with the same pair of dies, but one of them (No. 3) had the reverse die altered to accommodate a monogram. The staters (Nos 4.1 and 4.2) struck with the same pair of dies have obverses which display strong stylistic affinity with an obverse die of a stater of Callatis (No. 5) which was cut by engraver 'O' from Byzantium. The last two staters described in the catalogue (Nos 6 and 7) were produced with the same pair of dies, one of them displaying the alteration of the monogram formed by letters ME (No. 6) to HP (No. 7). The chronology of the coins is also discussed, with all of them dated to different intervals within the 2nd century BC (Nos 1-3, circa 175-150 BC; Nos 4.1-5, circa 150-140 BC and Nos 6-7, the 2nd half of the same century). Proposals regarding the chronology of some of the civic issues of Istrus are made, based on stylistic and physical similarities shared with staters described above (Nos 4.1-4.2 and 6-7). |
