Excerpt Dinogetia is one of a series of important fortresses along the Lower Danube: it has not yet benefited from a comprehensive study of the coin finds, despite excavations having been conducted there since 1939. In anticipation of this undertaking, published below are thirty-one Roman provincial and imperial issues from the site, together with seven Byzantine coins. Most of the coins were collected from the site's surface during archaeological excavations undertaken since the 1950s with only four (catalogue nos 13-15 and 18) having been found in various Byzantine contexts. Two coins were in private possession (catalogue nos 1 and 33). The following text provides a summary of the previous Roman and early Byzantine finds, while more recently collected items are discussed against the background provided. One coin (catalogue no. 33) is a Byzantine follis which was struck at a later date than the previously known finds. The latest coins from this group are five anonymous folles struck in the 11th century which confirm what is currently known about the coinage of this period.
