Excerpt | In this brief contribution, I bring back into discussion an interesting dies combination produced in the Syrian mint of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus. The resumption of the discussion is brought about by the emergence of an unpublished coin, which uses the same die for the obverse, but with another type of revers from the previously known ones. Thus, the number of Syrian monetary issues of Septimius Severus, which use the same obverse die, in combination with different types of reverse, rises to the number of four. We also try to explain the context and the true meaning of the monetary type „invicto imperatori”. According to the scholarly literature, this monetary type is often put in connection with the accession of Emperor Septimius Severus to the cult of Sol Invictus. |
